Tooth pain

Pain is a signal that something is wrong. Even a toothache that comes and goes deserves attention, because the cause usually gets harder to treat with time.

Patient education: emergency care

Common causes of tooth pain

  • Tooth decay. Bacteria in plaque produce acids that wear through enamel. Once a cavity reaches the softer layer underneath, sweets, cold or hot foods can trigger pain.
  • Infection or abscess. When decay or a crack reaches the pulp in the center of the tooth, it can become infected. A throbbing ache, swelling, a bad taste or a fever are warning signs.
  • A cracked tooth. Sharp pain when you bite down, especially when you release, can point to a crack.
  • Gum problems. Gum disease and gum recession can make teeth sore or sensitive near the gum line.
  • Worn enamel and sensitivity. Brushing too hard, acidic foods and drinks, and grinding can expose sensitive areas of the tooth.
  • Grinding or clenching. Often during sleep, this can leave teeth and jaw muscles aching in the morning.
  • Erupting or impacted wisdom teeth. These can cause pressure and pain at the back of the mouth.
  • Sinus pressure. A sinus infection can make the upper back teeth ache, even when the teeth themselves are healthy.

Easing the pain until your visit

  • Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently to remove anything caught between your teeth
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed on the label
  • Hold a cold compress against your cheek if there is swelling
  • Avoid very hot, cold or sugary foods, and chew on the other side

Don’t place aspirin or other pain medicine directly on the gum or tooth; it can burn the tissue.

When to call right away

Call us as soon as possible if the pain is severe or lasts more than a day or two, if you notice swelling in your gum or face, if you have a fever or a bad taste in your mouth, or if it hurts to bite. We provide same-day emergency dental treatment. If swelling is spreading quickly or making it hard to breathe or swallow, go to the emergency room.

Preventing toothaches

Most tooth pain starts with problems that are easy to catch early. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily and keeping up with regular checkups and cleanings let us find small cavities and cracks before they hurt, when a simple filling is often all you need.

  • Endodontics

    Apicoectomy

When infection lingers at the tip of a root after a root canal, a small surgery called an apicoectomy can often still save the tooth.

Most braces and aligner problems can be managed at home until your next visit. Here's how, and which ones need a call right away.
